Hinterlands was a short story written by William Gibson in the anthology 'Burning Chrome'. It's in my opinion the best science fiction story ever written.
William Gibson somehow managed to a combine cosmic horror and psychological horror with hard science fiction. The horror doesn't come from creepy aliens or big monsters; it comes from the fact that, even after all it's achievements, mankind is an insignificant atom compared to what the universe holds.
